Chapter 5

Raisa’s house

Raisa landed on the wrap-around deck of her tree house and shifted. Flying had calmed her a bit. Her anxiety level also had decreased, for the moment, because Bran hadn’t followed. Their bond showed his location was still in the vicinity of the store.

Mags landed gracefully next to her and retracted her wings into her plush fur.

Petting her familiar, Raisa could feel the wing slits. “Good flying, little one.”

“Thank you.” Mags angled her head and narrowed her eyes. “Why did we fly away? Don’t you want to know what happened after Iago took you?”

Raisa didn’t answer right away, instead she looked toward the store. The skies had darkened over that area and only that area. It wasn’t a normal meteorological event; it was one hundred percent the result of Bran’s emotions. His magic had an affinity with weather.

Touching his mind lightly, she found profound shock, love, so much love that her heart swelled with it, intense sadness, and—“Confusion?”

Hands on her naked hips, Raisa looked at Mags. “What in the blue blazes does he have to be confused about? He left me to Iago’s less than tender care.”

As upset with Bran as she was, her bond pushed her to fly back to him. To talk things out. And as she’d done for the last five years, she shoved the bond’s demands away.

“Don’t you think you should put some clothes on?” Mags asked. “You’ve got goose bumps all over.”

Raisa nodded. She turned her back on the dark skies over Finds, Designs, and Blooms, walked into her home, and headed for her bedroom.

Bran would come to her, as surely as day followed night. It would be a good idea to be dressed—if she talked to him at all. The jury was still out on that issue.

Mags followed her into the bedroom. The familiar jumped onto the bed, circled until she found the perfect spot, then sat and began grooming. She paused in mid-lick and patted the comforter. “Come sit. Time for some hard truth.”

Raisa came to the side of the bed. “I’ll stand. What hard truth?”

“Yes, your mate will follow.” Mags slitted her eyes. “Think about that. He. Will. Follow. Now, you never really answered my question: Don’t you want to know why he didn’t come for you before? Both back then and since Baba Yaga freed you? All along, you’ve simply assumed he’d abandoned you. I’ll just groom while you ponder.”

“Don’t you think I asked myself that question thousands of times since that day?” Raisa thrust her hands into the air and wildly gesticulated. “I’m not dense, ya know?”

“I didn’t say you were dense.” Mags had stopped cleaning her face and slowly blinked. “I’m pointing out that you’ve been looking at the past through a single lens. Try for a wider scope. Bran is here now. He’s come for you. Why now? And remember, I’m in your head. You want to go to him, but you’re afraid. All those abandonment issues from your childhood are messing with you and your bond to Bran.
